More St. Louis Summer Landscaping Advice
Welcome, St. Louis neighbors! Summer is officially in full gear by the 4th of July, and with it comes the classic Missouri heat and humidity. While we all love enjoying the sunshine in our backyards, our local landscape definitely feels the stress of the season.
At this time of year, your yard transitions from active spring growth to surviving the mid-summer scorch. To keep your landscaping looking vibrant and healthy until autumn arrives, here are the top tips for maintaining your St. Louis metro property in July.
1. Water Deeply and Strategically
As we mentioned last month in our Watering Tips for St. Louis Summers, proper hydration is THE single most important factor for your lawn and gardens. So we’ll mention it once again here!
Visit that article for more in-depth information, but the main point to remember is that instead of watering a little bit every day, focus on deep (more infrequent) watering.
2. Refresh Mulch
Now is a great opportunity to apply more mulch. If your garden beds are looking a bit parched, it might be time to add a fresh layer of mulch. A 2 to 3-inch layer of organic mulch—such as shredded bark or leaf compost—does wonders for your landscaping. It acts as a protective blanket that regulates soil temperature and locks in precious moisture. Even better, it naturally suppresses those pesky summer weeds, saving you from spending your hot afternoons pulling them by hand.
3. Cut Back Aggressive Plants
You may notice certain perennials in your garden beginning to take over. In St. Louis, some native, aggressive plants can overwhelm neighboring flowers and shrubs. In July, you can give summer bloomers like asters, goldenrod or native bluestem grass a summer cut. Trimming up to a third of the stems off the top stunts their aggressive growth and encourages a more compact and tidy appearance.
4. Watch for Pests and Fungal Diseases
With the high heat and frequent pop-up thunderstorms we experience, it’s critical to monitor your landscape for related issues. Keep an eye out for fungal diseases on your vegetable garden (like early blight on tomatoes) and check your turf for grubs. Catching these problems early makes them much easier to manage.
Keeping a yard looking pristine in the peak of summer is a lot of work. If you need a hand with trimming, weeding or tweaking your irrigation, consider reaching out to local St. Louis professionals like Environmental Landscaping for ongoing bed maintenance.
