You have just made an investment in having a landscaper install new trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, and or groundcover plants in your landscape, and of course want them all to survive!

The most important factor towards ensuring this is watering these plantings regularly. When it comes to watering, there are a number of misconceptions that you should be aware of. You’ve spent good money (and time if you planted them yourself) on these plants and you’re going to spend even more time and money (on your water bill) to keep them alive. If not, you’ll instead be spending it on replacing them when they die.

Don’t rely much on mother nature, as rainfall can be deceiving. You might think that the 45 minutes of strong thunderstorm just watered your plants well, but half of the rain ran off into the lawn because it came down so quickly, so only the top couple of inches of the mulch is wet. Unless it rains a light, soaking rain for at least 4-5 hours, don’t even consider natural precipitation as “watering”.

Standing with a hose is not good enough most times either. Small flowers with a 2″-4″ of a root system might be ok, but if you think standing there with a hose for a few minutes on that new tree or shrub will matter, you’re not doing enough. Water at the base of the tree or bush, and realize that you probably aren’t going to water too much. The majority of homeowners underestimate how much water their plants need each week, and very rarely do we see plants that have been over-watered!
