Busiest Time of Year for St. Louis Landscaping

Environmental Landscaping Company has been a top-rated St. Louis landscaping company going all the way back to 1970. During these many years, we’ve become experts in the local climate.

As longtime residents know, our region is characterized by short springs and falls with wide temperature swings and a long, hot summer. Officially we are in USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7, which uses historical climate data to inform local growers about what (and when) to plant.

Many sensitive (warm-season) crops and flowers can’t handle freezing temperatures, so a firm understanding of the average last frost date is crucial. In the Gateway City this usually falls around April 15, which is the earliest time to plant those things.

For trees (if they are dormant) and other larger plants, however, an earlier spring planting can actually allow them to establish roots before the heat sets in, provided the ground is workable.  This is where our many decades of experience with Missouri growing seasons comes in handy!

As Springtime gets going, this is a great time to encourage early bookings for landscaping projects. This is the busiest time in our industry (by far), so it’s important to schedule your projects early. Don’t wait until April or May to call, since you may not get your project completed until August!

New customers can also get a 20% early bird discount for any specified landscape project signed before March 15, 2026.

Saint Louis landscaping tips for March/April:

March is also the “last call” for pruning many deciduous shrubs and trees before they break dormancy. Just be sure not to remove this season’s buds from flowering shrubs (like Forsythia or Azaleas).

Another topic for this time of year in Missouri is weed prevention. Remember that proper timing is the most important factor effectively combat crabgrass and other annual weeds.

Pre-emergent herbicides must be applied before the soil temperature consistently reaches 55 degrees, which typically falls between mid-March and mid-April in St. Louis. For those looking for help with this annual maintenance, we can help ensure a beautiful, lush lawn this year without those weeds.
