During this time of year, most trees and perennials are dormant. But this doesn’t mean you should ignore your outdoor spaces. Here are some good landscaping tips for February/March:

• Even during the wintertime, evergreen plants require moisture! So if St. Louis has been lacking adequate rainfall and/or snow, get that hose out and water those plantings on a sunny day.
• The “Leave the Leaves” campaign has taught many homeowners that fallen leaves and hollow stems offer protection to pollinators and other beneficial insects during cold St. Louis winters. This debris also insulates your soil from freezing temps and prevents drying out. But after daytime temps reach 50°F (when insects emerge), you can remove this cover to protect your lawn from damage. Do the same inside garden beds to prevent mold and pests.
• Remove any accumulated debris from decks and patio surfaces to prevent staining.
• As you clean-up your yard, take this opportunity to assess your property. Compacted soil, bare patches and foot traffic damage are common during winter. Identify trouble spots now and they’ll be easier to address once conditions improve.
• Inspect patios, walkways and sidewalks too; temperature fluctuations can cause cracking.
