Excavating and grading for St. Louis landscapes

Grading is the unglamorous part of a landscape that decides whether the pretty work lasts. Water should leave the house, the patio should sit level, and new beds should not become bowls.

Environmental Landscaping handles the excavation and grading that our own projects require: patio bases, lawn renovation, planting beds, drainage runs, and reshaping slopes before we plant them.

When grading comes first

A soggy corner, a walk that pitches toward the foundation, or a lawn that scalps on a high spot all start as elevation problems. On smaller areas we can correct grade with soil and hand work. Larger areas need equipment, and it is cheaper to do that before new sod or a patio goes in.

If the wet spot is better solved with a drain than with fill, we will say so. Grading and drainage are often the same conversation.

Questions we hear often

Do you grade yards that you are not planting?

Grading is usually part of a patio, lawn, drainage, or planting project. Call with the address and a description of the slope and we will tell you if it fits.

Can you fix a low spot that holds water?

Often, yes, either by regrading so water can leave or by installing a drain. We will look at where the water is supposed to go before we add soil.
