Lawn seeding, sodding, and care in St. Louis
Cool-season lawns in St. Louis want a strong spring and a strong fall, then they spend summer trying not to give up. Clay soil, tree shade, and thin spots from foot traffic are the usual reasons a lawn looks tired.
We seed, sod, aerate, fertilize, and overseed. If you need the lawn established or brought back, that is the work.
Seeding and sod
Seed is the right tool when you can water and wait, especially for larger areas and for fall overseeding of tall fescue. Sod is the right tool when you need a surface now, or when washout would take the seed with it.
Spring crabgrass prevention and seeding do not belong in the same month. Pre-emergent that stops crabgrass also stops new grass seed. We will tell you which job should happen first on your lawn.
Aeration and fertilizer
Aeration helps water and seed reach roots in compacted clay. Fertilizer timing matters more than the brand on the bag. Core problems we see every year: mowing too short, watering for ten minutes every evening, and shade where fescue will never thicken.
If the lawn is failing because of drainage or shade, we would rather fix that than sell you another round of seed.

Questions we hear often
When should a St. Louis lawn be seeded?
Early fall is the most reliable window for cool-season grasses. Spring seeding can work if crabgrass prevention is timed around it, not on top of it.
Can you repair a lawn under mature trees?
Sometimes, with the right seed and less competition at the roots. If the shade is too deep, a bed of shade plants will look better than another thin patch of grass.
