Where lights usually go

Path lights mark steps, walkway edges, and grade changes so guests are not guessing in the dark. Accent lights pick out a tree, a stone wall, or the front of the house. Downlighting from a mature tree can wash a patio or a bed without a row of fixtures at eye level.

We plan the layout around the plants and hardscape already there, or around a renovation we are installing at the same time. Wiring is easier before new sod and mulch go down, so it is worth talking about lighting while the beds are still open.

Why low voltage

A 12-volt system is safer to live with than an old 120-volt line run through the beds, and LEDs draw far less power than the halogen bulbs they replaced. Fixtures can be aimed, and a photocell can turn the system on at dusk.

Yes. We can light a finished yard. If you are also renovating beds or building a patio, we would rather pull wire before the new plantings go in.

Do the lights stay on all night?

They can. Many systems use a photocell or a timer so they run from dusk until the hour you choose.
