Ornamental grasses for St. Louis landscapes

Ornamental grasses earn their keep in late summer and winter, when the flowers are done and you still want something moving in the bed. They also mark the edge of a walk or a patio without a shrub that needs weekly shearing.

Cut them back in late winter or early spring, before the new blades get tall. A fall haircut leaves the crown more exposed and throws away the winter look. We cover that timing on cleanup visits.
